Jones Highlights Busy Weekend with First Career IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Pole; Breaks Track Record at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park
Devin Jones had an action-packed week of racing at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, running both the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich and the IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Jones would prove to be a force to be reckoned with in both of the highly competitive series.
During practice and test sessions leading up to the weekend Jones felt strong about both the #34 ALARA Racing Street Tuner MX-5 and the #35 VeriStor Mazda MX-5. Jumping from one car to another also meant increased track time on one of the fastest circuits on the schedule.
“I really got a good feel for what is needed to go fast at a track like Canadian Tire Motorsports Park,” said Jones. “After running from one car to another, I started to get a rhythm and I knew the feel I wanted out of each car during the session.”
In only his second career IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge start, Jones put down a lap in the late stages of Friday afternoon’s qualifying session that earned him the TOTAL Pole Award and a new track record at the historic track.
“The pole was huge for me and the whole ALARA Racing team,” said Jones. “To do it with a Mazda in the IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge was an incredibly great moment. I had to dig deep late in the session and it’s a lap I defiantly won’t forget anytime soon.”
Jones would start the race from the pole and stayed within the top-3 during the first 45 minutes of the race, despite the car developing a misfire during the stint. After coming in for the driver change the ALARA Racing team found an electrical issue with the car causing the misfire. Unfortunately this took Jones and co-driver Christian Szymczak out of contention.
Putting the bad luck behind him, Jones turned his focus towards Mazda MX-5 Cup for rounds seven and eight of the series. In race one, the #35 VeriStor MX-5 battled through the tightly packed field to finish a strong 5th. In race two Jones was poised for another stout finish until a failing and inconsistent power steering pump stalled his efforts, Jones settled for 8th place.
“Overall this week was a definite success and I have to thank everyone who made it possible,” said Jones. “Regardless of the mechanical issues, being able to drive in two difference series’ and have success in both is something I’m very proud of. Thanks to VeriStor, ALARA Racing, Kent Stacy, Ken Murillo and all the crew for great cars.”
