Jones Adapts Well to the Fast and Daunting Circuit

Devin Jones and the CJ Wilson Racing team headed to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for rounds seven and eight of the 2014 Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich. Jones, coming off solid runs at the Houston Grand Prix, was looking to build off that momentum as the series started its second half of scheduled events.

The race weekend would mark the first time Jones has driven at the historic 10 turn road course.

“One of the first things I noticed in the opening practice at Mosport was the amount of blind corners on the track,” said Jones. “It’s high-speed and the car has to be on the edge to be fast, which makes driving around here a lot of fun.”

After fine tuning the VeriStor MX-5 during the weekend’s practice sessions, Jones placed himself in a solid top-10 qualifying position. Race one saw a two car break-away at the front along with a train of MX-5’s in the draft from 3rd back to 10th. Jones would finish inside the main pack in 9th.

Race two was later that afternoon and the track temperature had risen considerably making for a slick racing surface.

“I learned a lot in race one and was really looking forward to improving my result in the second race,” said Jones. “The track was very hot and greasy toward the end and everyone was sliding around, tiring to find some grip. I wanted to try and conserve my tires at the start and keep the air pressures down so I had something to battle with at the end,” Jones said. “My teammates and I were able to work pretty well together at the run to the finish, we were catching the race for the podium but just ran out of time.”

Jones would cap off another successful weekend with a 6th place finish in the VeriStor MX-5.

“I have to thank the CJ Wilson Racing guys for the hard work over the past few weeks,” said Jones. “It was tough with the quick turnaround from Houston but they did a great job, I’m looking forward to rewarding their efforts with a podium in the next rounds.”

The next round of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series will take place at Road America on August 8-10. Jones will race in conjunction with TUDOR United SportsCar Series.
