Coming into the Dwight Huffman Memorial race at Hickory Motor Speedway on October 15 and 16, team Devin Jones Racing was 100 percent prepared. With a new front clip and set up from PerformanceCenter Racing Warehouse, the No. 35 was ready for action once again.
“In Friday practice everything was flowing great, we didn’t even need to touch the car and we were at the top of the charts,” said Jones. “We started off with new tires and by the end of the day, with over a 100 laps on the tires, the car was still good.”
On Saturday, Jones did just one round of practice and parked the car for the second round because further practice wasn’t needed.
“When we qualified here last time and tied for pole, I barely scrubbed the tires. But this time that didn’t work,” said Jones. “We ended up qualifying mid-pack. When I went into turn three I knew we’d made a mistake. The front just chattered. But because the race is 177 laps I wasn’t concerned. Our car was running great on older tires.”
On Sunday, Jones started the race in 18th and by lap 13 he had made his way up to 12th.
“I thought this would be a good place to ride for a while until we got to about lap 60,” said Jones. “The cars that were in front of us were quality cars, I thought. But on lap 14, Steve Wallace in the 66 car turned the 4 car coming off of turn four. There was no place for any of us to go. That crash collected 13 cars and blocked the entire track.”
“I don’t understand what Wallace was thinking,” added Jones. “On lap 14 of a 177 lap race there is no reason to push the issue like that. It wrecked a lot of good cars.”
“We’ll get the car fixed up again for next season,” said Jones. “We are preparing for a full assault to win the UARA championship next season and we’re going to be testing in the off season at every track UARA will be running on.”
Devin Jones Racing would like to thank all of its supporters that have followed them throughout the 2011 season through its open wheel and stock car racing. DJR also thanks PerfomanceCenter Racing Warehouse for all of its support both on and off the track.
