While other drivers are resting this winter off season, Devin Jones has been spending his winter open wheel racing in a Skip Barber F2000 car. The busy off season is a precursor to what will be the most active racing year ever for the Devin Jones Racing team.
Team DJR has confirmed its commitment to race the The BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda, Skip Barber Summer Regional Series, along with up to five PASS South Super Late Model races, including the 300-lap “The Race” at North Wilkesboro as well as some Late Model Stock races at Hickory Motor Speedway and a UARA event. If additional outside funding can be found, team DJR will also be racing the USF2000 at the Milwaukee Mile which shares the event with the IZOD Indy Car Series, June 16-18.
“I think that being able to race alongside the IZOD Indy Car Series would be an experience like no other,” said Jones. “Racing these cars at the edge on a mile track would be great. The Skip Barber and MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development ‘Road to Indy’ ladder also has a lot to offer. They have a plan with financial scholarships that takes you through every step, all the way to an Indy car. The Skip Barber and Mazda group are a great bunch of people… they really care about driver development and the future of open wheel racing.”
Devin Jones Racing is also considering a partial schedule in the LATAM Formula-2000 series which races road courses throughout Latin America and the United States, pending schedule confirmation from the event organizers and series teams.
Jones is also looking forward to an active season racing in stock cars.
“The North Wilkesboro race seems to be turning out to be the premiere event to race in for Super Late Models in 2011,” added Jones. “Give our solid performance at North Wilkesboro last year, I think we have a good shot at it this year. It’s a very fun track to race on.”
“I just turned 16 in November, so I’m really looking forward to racing a Late Model Stock at tracks like Hickory and Tri-County in 2011,” said Jones. “This has always been part of our plan. We wanted to get experience in the high horse power Super Late Models. Now it’s time to start getting more experience in the heavier, less horse power Late Model Stock cars. I think this is going to be quite a challenge. There is definitely an art to racing them fast. It doesn’t look easy.”
“At this time in my driver development, I know it is important to get experience in many forms of motorsports,” added Jones. “It is what will continue to make me a well rounded driver. It’s going to be a busy season with as many as 40 to 45 races. I have so many options this year, and I’m meeting a lot of racing leaders from whom I know I’ll learn a lot. 2011 will be my most exciting season yet.”
