In preparation for the opening round of the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda, Devin Jones raced the Southern Regional Series at Sebring this past weekend. Team DJR wanted to put in some track time on the 3.7 mile technical road course before the first National tour stop.
After a couple rounds of practice to learn the 17 turn road course, Jones qualified in third and started the first race off pole. During Saturday’s race, Jones was running in second. With three laps to go, the third place car made contact with the rear of his car. Jones had to pit to check rear damage and went on to finish seventh.
On race day two, Jones was positioned to start the race in eighth due to a gridding mix up. He worked his way up to the break-away lead pack and made his way to fourth when time ran out.
“I’m really glad that we showed up at Sebring this weekend,” said Jones. “It was critical for us to get seat time here. Saturday we definitely had a top three car. It was unfortunate that we got hit. Sunday’s race I felt very confident that we could run down the lead draft and finish fourth. This being our third Skip Barber race, I’m really starting to understand what makes these cars work. I feel very confident that we will be competitive at the Nationals. I’m definitely going to be on attack mode for those races, bringing a little short track racing style to the road course.”
