The Devin Jones Racing #35 team headed to Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) on Saturday, April 10th, to participate in the “Easter Bunny 150” PASS South Super Late Model event. After a trying day of qualifying and racing action, Devin Jones was able to steer his car to a 16th-place finish.
With over 50 cars showing up to compete, the first race was to just make it into the field by qualifying in the top 20. After qualifying 17th, Jones turned his focus to the 150-lap event. With the competition tight and the action over the top, Jones had to overcome a few spins to avoid major collisions, coming from the back multiple times, to race within the top 10. At the conclusion of the event, Jones thought he crossed the line in ninth, but a scoring issue relegated him to a 16th-place finish.
Despite the change in finishing position, Jones was satisfied with the outcome of the event, being able to take home a car in one piece.
“It was a challenging day for sure,” said Jones. “Our first hurdle was to make it into the race, which we did by qualifying 17th. During the race, we were moving up and being careful, waiting for the end of the race. Unfortunately there were a few incidents on the track that forced some quick, evasive maneuvers. While we were able to avoid major damage, it forced us to race back up to the front multiple times. We probably passed more cars during the race than any other driver.
“We are still baffled by the scoring and don’t ever recall becoming a lap down during any of the cautions. They never told us we were a lap down when we were gridding up after the cautions. We are eager to see where it happened on the video. I believe we had a top-five car, but circumstances continued to prevent us from staying up towards the front. We will take the finish and build on that for our next race at Orange County Speedway.”
The PASS South Super Late Model Series will be back in action at Orange County Speedway (NC) on Saturday, April 24th, 2010, for the Orange Blossom Special 125. Fans can get free admission to the event by visiting the PASS website at www.proallstarsseries.com.
