The Devin Jones Racing team headed to Orange County Speedway (NC) on Saturday, April 24th, to compete in the PASS South Super Late Model “Orange Blossom Special 125” event. After a strong top-10 qualifying run and starting from the pole, Jones lead multiple laps and ran in the top 10 throughout the day, finishing 10th at the end of 125 laps of competition.
The day started off with a solid practice session, which saw Jones near the top of the charts. That momentum carried into qualifying, where Jones timed in sixth fastest.
“We had a really good run and Jeff (Fultz) set up the car great,” said Jones. “The field is real close, so hopefully the weather will hold off and we will have a great race.”
On the top-10 redraw, Jones was able to pull the number one chip, putting his #35 machine on the pole for the start of the race.
With weather in the area, Jones lead the field to the green flag and led multiple laps during the first half of the race, despite sputtering from under the hood. Multiple restarts cost Jones a few positions, but he was still able to bring his car home in one piece in the 10th position.
“We led a lot of laps, which was cool,” explained Jones. “The motor was sputtering a little bit at about a quarter into the race and I burned the tires up real bad. We were just trying to hold on there in the end.”
The race was the first weekend working with Jeff Fultz during the 2010 racing season, something that proved to be key in Jones’ solid showing at OCS.
“Jeff Fultz did a great job on the car and did a great job with the set-up. I loved working with him this week. We will come back fighting at Wake County.”
The Pro All Stars Series South Super Late Model division will be back in action at Wake County Speedway (NC) on Friday, May 7th.
