The Devin Jones Racing #35 team headed to Wake County Speedway (NC) on Friday, May 7th, to compete in the PASS South Super Late Model “Capital City Clash” 150-lap event.  After a solid qualifying effort and racing the first part out in front of the pack, Jones faded with an electrical issue, finishing 16th.

Jones’ day started off well with a practice and qualifying session going to the right way under the direction of Jeff Fultz and his support team.

“Practice went really well; the car was good,” said Jones.  “Jeff and Andrew did a great job and the car was set up well.   We picked up a lot in qualifying.  It was a little bit surprising qualifying second, but we were really happy with it.  It was good getting the first on the redraw and we were really confident going into the race.”

Starting from the pole, Jones was the driver to beat at the start of the event.  The only thing that could slow his #35 machine was a mechanical bug, which bit him while racing in the top-three positions.

“Jay Fogleman had the jump on us at the start, but we had a really strong car and ended up getting by him the first lap,” explained Jones.  “We were out front for a long time and were lapping cars.  Everything was going good and we lead about the first 30 laps.  On a restart, Ryan Lawler got the jump on us, but we were settling in, in third.

“We had an ignition go out and it started to sputter at high RPMs, so we had to come in while we were in third, which was unfortunate because I think we had a car that could have won the race.  It was probably the best car I have ever had in a Late Model for sure.”

Despite the 16th-place finish, Jones was very upbeat due to the performance of his race team.

“We can’t be mad at what happened because we have been so strong the past two races.  We are looking forward to the next few races because we have a really good thing going with Jeff Fultz.  I think we have something for the competition to deal with.”

Next up for Devin Jones will be the PASS South Super Late Model event at Concord Speedway (NC) on Saturday, May 29th.
