Devin Jones made his move this month to the NASCAR Whelen All –American Series Late Model Stock division. Jones raced his first two Late Model Stock races at Hickory Motor Speedway on June 11 and June 18.

“I have always loved racing at Hickory, so moving to a late model stock at Hickory was a fun change,” said Jones. “The Late Model Stocks are fun to drive and racing in them requires skill and patience.  Without the higher power I’ve been used to in the super late model, you have to rethink your race strategy so that you can maintain your speed while making smart moves to gain position on the track.”

In his first race on June 11, Jones qualified in 9th and finished the day in 7th.

“It was a great first race,” said Jones. “We had good speed and quickly adapted to the new car. I just ran out of time to make up more spots.”

In his second race on June 18, rain cut practice short and eliminated the qualifying session. As a result, the field started the race based on points, and with only one race in this season, Jones was relegated to start in the back of the field. But, by the end of the 50 lap event, Jones had picked off five cars to finish in 12th.

“If the rain hadn’t come, we could have qualified in the top five,” said Jones. “We were fast and the car was solid.  What I’m finding out with these cars is that when you get an opportunity to pass, you have to seize it. You have to be very precise with these cars.”

Jones will continue to run the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock series at various tracks this summer.
