Championships are won on days like team Devin Jones Racing had on Friday, July 2 during the Firecracker 125 PASS South race at Greenville-Pickens, in Greenville, S.C. Devin Jones Racing would fight back strong from a frustrating qualifying run to finish the night in a solid 9th.
Devin Jones had his #35 rolling during practice finishing the final session with the 8th fastest car.
“We felt confident going into qualifying but as it turns out we may have had a right front shock going bad and it really slowed us down,” said Jones. “I could feel something was amiss as soon as I left the grid. The car chattered going into turn three and I couldn’t put it where we needed to for a solid qualifying run.”
Jones would qualify in 22, putting him for the first time in his PASS South career to start in the “last chance race” with 11 other cars.
“When you are faced with challenges you just have to put your head down and keep going,” said Jones. “And that’s what we did in the heat race. The number one goal was to stay out of trouble and make it into the main.”
That’s just what Jones did. He would start the feature in 22nd. But, just seven laps into the race his window net fell down so he cautiously rode around waiting for the first caution so he could pit. The team quickly fixed his net and made a few small adjustments and the #35 was out again rolling strong.
Jones drove a strategic race, passing when he needed to without using up his tires. While other drivers were falling off the pace, Jones had his “Social Distortion” branded car charging. He finished out the 125 lap feature with a strong 9th, making a for a good points recovery.
“It was a great effort and everyone from Fultz Racing worked very hard,” said Jones. “We were very good on the high side of the track and had a great car for the long runs. From where we were after qualifying, I’m very pleased with how the night progressed. We ended on a high note with a surprisingly good points run, knocking on the door of the top four.”
Jones will be racing again on August 7 at the "Daniel Boon Classic" as Newport Speedway in Newport, Ten.
