Against All Odds, Jones and Team Rally to Make the Most of a Frustrating Night

Coming off a strong run at Anderson Motor Speedway, Devin Jones Racing (DJR) and team returned to a track where they have had a lot of past success, Newport Speedway.

Team DJR was ready to repeat their solid Anderson performance at the UARA-STARS Jeff Auto Sales 150, but other events were in store for the #35 VeriStor Ford. Even so, with team work and perseverance, the team came home from the event one spot better in points, breaking into the top five.

“Newport is a great track,” said Jones. “In my mind it is one of the most exciting tracks we go to on the schedule. It’s a one-of-a-kind place with high banks and fast speeds. We’ve always been strong there in super late models and I was looking forward to running a late model stock there.”

The team was solid in practice on Friday, turning the fourth fastest practice time of the day. Going into Saturday, Jones and team remained at the top of the charts and turned in a 7th place qualifying run in an extremely tight field.

“The car was strong for qualifying,” said Jones. “It was very solid. The only thing that hurt us a bit was going out early in the session. Because of how close the times were, any little advantage can make all the difference.”

At the start of the race, Jones was comfortably riding just outside the top five. On a restart towards the midpoint of the race, Jones moved his way into the top five and was showing his strength for the second half of the race. It was then that the 19 car of Chad Finchum literally ran out of talent coming off of turn two and climbed over the left rear of the #35 VeriStor Ford. It turned Jones and put him in the way of another car coming through the back straightaway, causing additional damage.

Jones was aided to the pits and the team rallied. They quickly replaced both rear tires and patched the body work to get Jones back onto the track. Jones got back out loosing minimal laps and continued to ride to make up points on a night where attrition was high. It was at that point that Jones broke an axel and came back into the pits. The team thought the night might be over, but following a major red-flag incident on the track, they were able to rally one again to get the #35 back onto the track to finish the final laps of the race and salvage what points could be salvaged during a night of unexpected events.

In the end, Jones finished the race in 15th, just enough to gain the points needed to move him from 6th to 5th in UARA series points to date.

“It was a fantastic evening of teamwork for the Devin Jones Racing crew,” said Jones. “I’m very grateful for all of the hard work of the Chase Pistone Inc. crew, including Chase, Greg, Stan, Wayne and Ken. When you have something like that happen that’s out of your control, it’s good to have people that can rally around to salvage everything that can be had. We were able to get everything we could out of the night given the circumstances. It puts us into a strong position going into Hickory.”

Next up for Devin Jones Racing will be the UARA-STARS seventh race at Hickory Motor Speedway on June 23, 2012.
