Overcomes a Blown Engine to Capture Another Top Five and the Pigwire Electrifying Move of the Race Award

Coming in to the UARA-STARS Racing Electronics 150 at Caraway Speedway, Devin Jones was ready to get his #35 VeriStor Ford back to the top of the charts.

After a series of motor incidents in UARA rounds seven and eight, the team was confident that its motor problems were behind them. But the road would be a bit steeper than they thought.

“After Newport, we had a new crate motor built for us that we were eager to try at Caraway,” said Jones. “We got it in the car just in time to make our way out to Caraway for Friday practice. I’d never driven at Caraway before, so I was doubly eager to get out on the track.”

But after just about 50 laps on the new motor, it blew up going into turn three coming to rest abruptly in the pits before the practice session was even halfway over. Its new motor was in pieces and a new strategy for race day needed to be put in place quickly.

“The team put the car into Chase Pistone’s race hauler and took it back to the shop to swap out the motor for our backup motor,” said Jones. “By the time Saturday practice rolled around, they had the car back at the track and ready for action.”

Jones and the crew went to work quickly to pick up where they left off the day before to fine tune the set up. They nailed it in the final practice and were ready to see what they could do in qualifying. The result was impressive as Jones laid down the fast lap of the day with a 17.219 and claimed his first career Sunoco Pole award.

From his first place starting position, Jones was prepared to stay out front all night. After leading a number of laps, the #28 of points leader Travis Swaim took over the lead. The two worked together to gain a two car breakaway throughout the midpoint of the race, with nearly a straight away between them and the third place car.

A late race caution mixed up the field a bit, putting Jones in a three-wide Bassett brothers sandwich with the #4 and #44 cars. For this, Jones was awarded the Pigwire Electrifying Move of the Race. As the race ticked down to its final laps, a caution brought out a final green-white-checkered. Jones raced neck and neck to cross the line in fourth, delivering another top five finish for the #35 VeriStor Ford.

“One thing I know about our race team is that we never give up,” said Jones. “After our motor gave way on Friday, we would have never considered that we’d have been in contention for a top five, let alone a pole. But with everyone’s hard work, we delivered. I can’t wait to see what we have at Concord next week.

“Special thanks goes out to CP Inc. including Chase Pistone for his never say die attitude; our No. 1 car chief, Greg; Wayne Miller for getting the tires right; loyal soldier JR Allen, and Super Stan the Spotter Man who always gets me cleared,” said Jones. “I’d also like to thank Pink Carburetors and everyone at UARA for putting on another great show.”

Devin Jones Racing will race next at the UARA-STARS 10th race at Concord Speedway on August 4, 2012.
